Dear Republican National Committee . . .

Chairman Robert (Mike) Duncan,

I recently received a spiffy packet from your organization with a large picture of the President and the First Lady. rnc.jpgYou state;

I hope you are proud to receive the enclosed personalized photograph of [the] President . .

Considering that I have never been enrolled as a Republican, I did find this outreach somewhat curious rather than a source of pride. The fact that I currently serve on the Libertarian National Committee doesn't entitle me to the expectation that you know who I am. None the less, I am taking this opportunity to write back and return the contents with a request that you consider joining our party in an effort to reduce government, withdraw from Iraq and promote the ideals of the free market.

As you may know former Congressman Bob Barr recently accepted a position on the LNC for what we call Region 4. As you know, Mr. Barr was formerly a Republican. His steadfast belief in personal freedom and the harm of an ever increasing encroaching Federal government has caused him to work closely with the ACLU and recently the Marijuana Policy Project. While you have;

. . no doubt that our nation is safer, freer and more prosperous today because George W. Bush is our President.

I do. Aside from any non-interventionist assumptions that I could make as Libertarian ( and the corresponding accusations of isolationism one must suffer ), I believe your support for Mr. Bush has fundamentally put America at risk strategically and financially. That fact that 'libertarian' oriented voters and the Party itself, has placed Democrats in power in the Congress should in no way absolve many of those who now seek to replace him.

I am also curious about the person who referred me to you as someone committed to the President and the Party's core principles and values. As you may know the Libertarian Party has assumed the moniker of the Party of Principle. It is our core belief that people have the absolute right to be left alone. The provisions of the Patriot Act, the National ID Act and the abuses of Guantanamo Bay on the sensibilities of Americans who value liberty and freedom above all else is seriously at risk. rnc_elephant.jpg

Thus I will decline your offer to join the RNC as a citizen of New York. I am opposed to taxation and welfare and would be opposed to efforts simply to cut or reform the latter and former. As I recently received a reminder from Shane Cory, our Executive Director, to renew membership. I will also be engaged in fund raising for our Party in an effort to quell the aggressions and abuses of government lead by both the GOP and Democrat Party. As you may 'spend many weeks arguing' over the recent failures of the Republican Party, that consideration only takes a few split seconds in my estimation. As you talk about the future of your Party and its opportunities, you might consider a member in your own ranks ( a former LP candidate for President in 1988), Dr. Ron Paul as your next nominee. The likes of Rudy Giuliani or Mitt Romney will never meet the expectations of people who desire liberty in our lifetime. Representative Paul has been a consistent critic of undeclared wars, fiat currencies and socialized health care.

I probably won't bother to mail this whole thing back, but it makes for some blog fodder. Postscript: The envelope has 'Do not Bend' on the front and a self-addressed envelope inside. I sent the picture back without comment
